San Antonio HS Girls Preseason District 5A's Top Ten 2013-2014

First, we are still very early to make picks for who the Top Ten should be. But that being said, you have to start somewhere and sometime. Many factors will change the dynamics of the list as the season goes on.

Honorable Mentions, Churchill, Reagan, McArthur, Smithson Valley. All these teams have a real good chance of making the playoffs but will find it difficult to win District Championships.

10. Clark- They lost a lot of seniors but still have enough to make a good run. Positives: The majority of the players play in AAU Club teams. Kirsten Kramer 2015 should have a major impact on the teams fortunes. Questions: HS Varsity experience, What style of play is the Coach going to implement for a lot of young talent?, Who is going to be the go to player down the stretch of a tight game?

9. O"Connor- A strong core of returning players make them a team to contend. Positives: Strong savvy guards and an inside presence in Shelby Miller 2015. Deceiving very athletic starting lineup. Questions: Chemistry seems to be a lingering question, Who's team is it?, How deep is the bench?, Can anyone average more than 2 assists a game?

8. Madison- Could surprise a lot of teams. Very underrated point guard in Moriah Creswell 2015 can make a make a major contribution to their playoff hopes. Positive: Solid group of players that seem to be hungry.
Questions: Varsity experience, chemistry and confidence.

7. Stevens- No matter who is in the lineup, I am sure that their Coach is going to get the most of them. Positives: Point Guard Julia Rendon 2014 and Deleesha Monroe 2014 should make the difference on how far the team goes. Also Sammie Washington 2016 and EJ Garcia 2015 should be contributing significantly to the team playoff hopes. Questions: How deep is their bench?, Can they maintain and endure a long season?

6. Jay- You can never count Jay out in anything. They have a real good strong core inside and out. Positive: Coach is well respected and can have real good game plans against anyone. Destiny is gone but still have fire power to contend for the District Championship. Underrated player in Ashia McLaurin 2014 and Katelyn McCullar 2015 Questions: How is the team going to respond long term without Destiny running the show after 4 years?, Who is going to be the go to player?

5. Brandeis- I will not be surprised if this team moves up the list in the first few months. Positives: Deep team with a lot of AAU Club team experience. They have a strong inside presence in Mykel Costley 2014 and Morgan Williams 2015. They have a strong group of guards led by savvy and very capable point guard in Hannah Thompson 2014. Add freshman Gabby Connally to they mix and you have a strong contender not just for District but for City. Questions: Can they put away the likes of perennial contenders like Wagner and Steele?,Can they establish a defensive identity with their potential offensive game?

4.Wagner- When you have a player like Amber Ramirez 2016, you always are going to contend for anything that is thrown at you. Positives: Tough minded players and very athletic group. Add freshman Kiana Williams to the mix and anything goes. Questions: How is their inside game going to look with the graduation of Tesha Smith?, How deep is their bench with battle tested players?

3. Johnson- Even though they have lost some major talent, they still have a lot of talent. Positives: Gabby Bowie 2014 seems to be ready for a breakout year. Erica Sanders 2015 should help give a 1, 2 punch. Tara Molina 2016 and Sandy Ramirez 2016 give the team depth in the guard compartment. Questions: With the departure of Davenport, how is the inside game going to look?, How deep is the bench going to be?

2. Judson- Arguably one of the most athletic teams outside Houston and Dallas areas. Positive: Whole nucleus of starters returning to make a run. Strong rebounding team. Very strong inside game with Simone Fields 2014 seeming unstoppable. Capable and seasoned Point Guard Samantha Allen 2014 running the team. Strong lock down defenders. Add transfer Belle Tovar 2016 to the mix and the potential goes up exponentially that the team can contend not only for a District Championship but City as well. Questions: Can the team as a whole get over the hump against Wagner?, Can they avoid scoring slumps?

1. Steele- Returning State Finalists with possibly the best player in the city (playing HS ball) in McKenzie Calvert 2014. Positives: Loaded!! Enough said Questions: How are they going to respond with the departure of Kyra Lambert 2015.

This list only contains 5-A San Antonio schools.
