Tara Molina has been an Islander since day 1 back when the girls were incoming 6th graders.
I first briefly laid my eyes on her when she was trying out for a team that my daughter played on before the formation of Leaders Express Organization. At the time I was hoping she joined that team. She didn't, which was good for the future of the Islanders.
I next saw her play against the Lady Hoops team. If anybody knows anything about girls AAU basketball, then you will know that Lady Hoops team was filled with the best players for their age group and then some. It was only when Tara was in 5th grade, but you could see her showing her tremendous skill set. It was if it was 1 player against 5,6,7,8 players if you counted the Lady Hoops bench.
Her skill set at 5th grade was higher than most High School girls is right now. Let me repeat that in case in didn't sink in. HER SKILL SET AT 5TH GRADE WAS HIGHER THAN MOST HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS RIGHT NOW!
When she joined the Islanders, it cemented our success for the future.
But not everything was perfect. Due to UIL restrictions, she couldn't play with the Islander team she was supposed to play.
She willingly sacrificed for the betterment of the Organization and played for the Islander team that had players still honing and developing their skills. She did this, all the while, with her trademark smile. And in doing this she had some spectacular performances against the likes of the Finest, Sophia Young, Jayhawks, Crossfire, Push the Rock and none more better than against the Lady Hoops.
The setting is a couple of years ago, in North Dallas. The Lady Hoops had combined with the Dream Team to form a National team. There was at least 7 D1 kids in that teams roster including our very own Belle and Vikki. We had a scrappy hard working team led by Tara and Sandy Ramirez.
What Tara Molina did in that game was one of the best AAU performances I had the joy of Coaching and seeing. It was in short.... wait for it...... wait for it....... LEGENDARY!
After there was no issue regarding UIL restrictions, she still had to wait for her time even after all those performances. The team was real guard heavy and she had to come off the bench for limited action.
On top of that, I was real hard on her to get better and not settle.
Any other player could have seen it differently. She could have gone and played with Any Team and probably started and received a lot more glory.
Tara Molina just wanted to be an Islander....
That's what makes this team special.
So fast forward to PrimeTime Nationals 2013.
She helped jump start the team by leading the team in scoring the first couple of games. And Yes I am still hard on her to push her to get better, and Yes she is still shy and way too modest about her game and Yes after winning the Championship, I could see her with her trademark smile.......
Almost as to tell the whole world,
Its Good to be an Islander!
The Few, the Proud, Your Islanders!

SA Islanders Erin Wimberley aka "Winner"
Erin Wimberley aka "Winner" has been an Islander from day 1 of the Organization's inception.
She is an epitome of what makes this Organization go. And in turn, the same Organization is living up to its name of Leaders Express!
Besides working hard at her academics, her GPA is through the roof, she has patiently worked hard for her opportunity.
She has battled through a lot of injuries and worked hard towards attaining goals. She was coming off the bench the last two years behind one of South Texas most dynamic posts.
This season, she finally had her opportunity to start.
I challenge anyone to show me a better team player. Never worrying about stats or publicity, just trying to do her Best for her teammates, her coaches, her friends, her family and Parents and more importantly for herself.
If Patience is a Virtue, then Erin "Winner" exemplefies what Leaders Express is about.

2013 PrimeTime Nationals JV Girls Champions
So how can you properly describe the feelings, the emotions, the atmosphere, the tension, the highs, the lows, the drama, the enormity of the moment.........
I know I was feeling upbeat before the tournament started. I knew once the tourney started, it was going to be a whirlwind. Although the setting at the IAD Center was all basketball, it was missing something that only the Frisco Fieldhouse can give. The feeling of when you take a breath of air, all you take in is Basketball. But we had to do the best under the circumstances.
I was anxious to get started to see which team was going to show up. All season we had been doing dribbling drills, basketball drills, strength and conditioning, scrimmaging boys, playing up, instilling discipline and attention to detail. All that is great, but what will be our Girl's Mindset going into the first game be.
1st game finally came and the girls showed me they came to play. But a lot of teams were making their own statements on the court. Some in such a big way that the buzz around the gym was of appointing early favorites right from the get go.
But not to be outdone, our girls started to get some praise early on. "Coach, you have a well coached team. Your girls have great fundamental bball skills." I knew that the true test was going to be under adverse conditions.
Our girls didn't let up the rest of pool play. Nothing spectacular, just taking care of business. A lot of growing up and a defensive mindset started to grow. While other teams were winning in spectacular fashion, we were just quietly and efficiently moving along.
Once bracket play started, we were in a tough predicament. The majority of 1st place teams from pool play received 1st round byes, particularly the teams making a lot of noise in pool play. Our style of play is hard to sustain for any team for 1 game much less 3 games. Plus we only had 8 players. Was that going to be enough? We were going to have to just do with what we had.
My thoughts were of lets just get this thing started. I was excited for the girls but I was extremely relaxed and confident in our teams ability.
The girls didn't let up at the start of bracket play. My sense was the Chemistry was good. Our team defense was starting to show in a Big way. Coach Drew and I pushed the girls hard to stay focused and put attention to detail.
For me one of the turning point for our chances to go far came with one simple adjustment in defense that after 3 or 4 games, our girls finally started grasping. Coach Drew was endlessly pounding into their fabric, into their DNA, make your player GO LEFT! (or Opposite their strong hand) And it wasn't just for the guards, it went for the Posts as well. Make players beat you doing something they are not comfortable with. What a concept. That concept intertwined with with our pressure defense made our team that much stronger.
Late Saturday night at 8pm was going to be a major test to our conditioning since we already had played twice and the team we were playing only once. Before the game, I overheard opponent's Parents pointing at the Poster Boards on the wall where the Brackets were posted. They were completely overlooking us and looking ahead to see what their toughest competition was going to be once they took care of us. Trash talking. Wow. Almost as if we should just call it quits before the game started. Aaaahhhh, just exactly the ammunition I needed to put in the girls mindset before the game.
Our girls started slow and the other team started hot. Their fans were going frantic but I was proud of the girls. I didn't see anyone flinch. Although we were losing and were in a big hole, we were fighting and playing hard. Things were not going well but our girls never flinched. Patience, here it comes.....
Keep working, keep playing hard, keep believing, keep clawing, keep scratching, keep up the pressure, keep forcing them left, and Boom it came!
The other team started getting frustrated, starting losing focus enabling us to make a huge run...
Islander Basketball anyone.....
But the Big Lady hadn't sung yet and we were coasting along. 9 point lead with a minute and a half went to only 2 point lead in 30 seconds. Tension filled the gym. Fans were yelling, Coaches were yelling, the court was packed and electricity filled the air. The girls weathered the storm and pulled it out with some clutch free throws and hard defense stops.
Yeahh Baby, we are in the Final 4. That's exactly what came to my mind.
It's late, we are all tired. Let's get these ladies fed and ready for bed.
The next morning came and I was pumped up for the girls.
We were playing a well coached good shooting team. We needed to put the emotions of winning 3 games the day before aside and focus. What will we still have in the tank, mentally and physically after already playing 6 games. The way we were running or lack of running, it seemed at certain points of the game that we were playing in the moon. Houston we might have a problem. Blast off hasn't taken place and it's already 28 minutes of game time past due. 2 minutes left and only a 2 point lead. Basketball instincts take over, strong guard handles, taking care of the ball, strong defense, huge rebounds and huge free throws seal our fate. Did we survive or did we just do what we needed to do? At this point who cares. We are in the Championship game.
How much do we have in the tank? Are we running in fumes? About 2 1/2 hours till show time and my thoughts and mindset leave the gym and Dallas area altogether.
My thoughts took me back in time to San Antonio. All those hard workouts the girls had endured. All the hard training, hard work and sweat comes down to this. Trying to push their buttons to make them better players, better individuals. Pushing them to the limit mentally and physically and testing them under Pressure to see how they react. I knew coming this far was not good enough, not this time.
I wanted to Win, Coach Drew wanted to Win and we made sure the girls knew what we came down here for. We didn't want them to believe, we just wanted them to Win! There was no other option.
That's what makes these girls so special...
The game started tight and slow. Almost like two great boxers feeling each other out. No one wanted to do mistakes yet that is exactly why mistakes were being done. It almost felt any team could just explode at any given moment. Players fought hard on both teams. A lot of great defense on both sides made for a lot of mistakes. Excitement and anticipation filled both sides of the stands. Other teams, other coaches, other fans filled the court to witness what was going to happen.
The little team that can........ WON!

Maybe I didn't give our experience any justice in my words. Just take a look at the Picture, maybe that will do a better job. They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

That's the Word
Have you heard......
Sandy Ramirez (2016) is back with the SA Islanders. Although petite like her counterparts, she brings and packs a big punch that compliments the Islanders teams. She is versatile, aggressive, quick, handles the ball well and is finding consistency in her shot. She is capable of turning a game around offensively and defensively with her relentless play. The Word is that she is at the gym training, working on her game and conditioning at least half the day everyday!
The Word is Erin Wimberley (2016) aka Winner is quietly emerging as a bona fide big in the San Antonio area and Texas to hoot, with her AAU performances against some tough competition. How is it that she can compete in a high level in the AAU circuit against level of competition superior to High School Ball? The Word is Confidence! Hmmm...maybe her High School team should take note! She is working in the mornings to improve her conditioning and her game. Take notice, one of the most underrated players is hungry.
April Mathews (2015) and Bobbi Timmons (2016) are finally healthy again and working to add to their game. April has basically worked herself up to the Islanders Black Team. The Word is, expect big things to come! She is steadily improving to become solid like a Rock. Bobbi is on a mission. Her shot is pure and range is deadly. The Word is she continues to work on her shot and game.
What do you have when you wake up Monday to Friday around 5am to start training at 615am to 945am? The Word is Commitment! Alexia Torres (2016), Bri Lane (2016), Frankie Owens (2015), Arianna Craver (2015), Tara Molina (2016), Bri Soliz (2017), Hannah Murray (2015), Ashley Adaszczyk (2019) have been hitting it hard. The dedication and commitment these young ladies have displayed is remarkable.
Their High School coaches should take note. The word is Frankie, Bri Lane, Bri Soliz, Arianna, Ashley and Hannah are having stellar, productive AAU seasons.
Julie Hernandez (2016), Lunden Patterson (2015), Kishon Mackey (2016) are growing and showing positive signs of improvement. The Word is they all have a legitimate chance of contributing a lot of minutes with their High School teams. Gabby Bernal (2015) is helping lead her High School team to an undefeated Summer League schedule. Erin Ashley (2016) aka Awesome is slowly but surely coming back from injuries. Don't count her out in anything she puts her mind to. She is resilient and tough as nails.
In Corpus Christi, the word is two of the best young players are putting some time in the gym. Victoria Salinas is hard at work in the mornings doing conditioning and skill work plus added training in the evenings. Alexis Worley is participating in UT and A&M camps plus training in the evenings. Their High School coach should count his blessings. The sparkling city by the bay should have some players that sparkle when High School ball starts up.
Belle Tovar (2016), where is she at? The Word is anywhere the gym is available. Working and fine tuning on her game. Never satisfied, looking to add to her resume. There is never enough time...
Tovar is part of the starting back court with Molina and Torres leading the way, along with Ramirez and Timmons complimenting at a moments notice, having Monster performances in the AAU circuit.

FAB 4
Looking at the SA Islanders girls basketball team, you will find players that are not only teammates in the same AAU organization but teammates in their respective High Schools.
Alexis and Vikki will be together at Ray High School in Corpus Christi. You have the Big 3 from Smithson Valley, Erin aka Awesome, Erin aka Winner and Guinevere. You have the little 3 from Marshall, Lil Bri, Lexy and Bobbi.
But the most intriguing combination of players come from Clark.
The FAB 4, as they like to be called, April, Lunden, Frankie and Arianna, have a unique relationship.
They all are shy especially around the old folks, but they all have their own outgoing personalities.
Who is the smartest, who has the best dance moves, who is the fastest, who likes to read? Don't know for certain, but I do know basketball brings them together, establishing memories that will be with them a long time.
Girls Basketball...........
Hard work, sweat, frustration, jubilation, pain, invincible, long hours, dedication, low times, good times, low point, high point, agony of defeat, thrill of victory, rivalries, teammates, losing, Champions, Parents yelling, Parents bragging, disappointment, Proud Parents!!!!!
Support Girls Basketball,
It's Fabulous, It's Fabulous, It's Fabulous, It's Fabulous. Yes 4 times over or should I just put it.....
